After photographing JEFF & ASHLEE’S WEDDING in Peoria, my husband and I decided to visit Chicago for a couple days. My mom’s side of the family is from the Chicago area, but the last time I was there was the summer of 1996. I’ve been eager to get back to Chi Town to experience it as an adult so we thought we would take advantage of the opportunity. What I discovered? I really love Chicago. I love it because:
– it’s a big city, but it doesn’t feel ginormous
– your scenery can change from skyscrapers to beach in just a matter of blocks
– the people are so friendly and approachable
– the public transportation is easy to decipher
– DEEP DISH PIZZA
– the architectural history is abundant
– the lake is the prettiest blue color!
Because I had all of my photography gear with me for the wedding, I was having a hard time deciding what to carry around while sightseeing. This is the tough part about being a photographer while vacationing like normal folk. In fact, I get stressed out over making sure I have enough lenses with me to capture everything I want to capture, and then I end up not fully enjoying myself because I’m so worried about photographing it the entire time. So, thanks to encouragement from my husband, I ventured the streets of Chicago armed with only my Contax 645 medium format film camera and 80mm lens. The load was still heavy, but mentally it was such a relief to only take a photo when I really wanted it. I did have my iPhone, so I was able to take some digital snapshots and then save the film for more visually interesting shots. Anyway, this the majority of my collection of photos from Chicago and I hope that you enjoy them!
